Methodological suggestion:

Existing implementations:

Identify usage domains.
I would say

  • search
  • language selector/new lexeme
  • item selector on items

Should be considered as serving separate usecases.

Thus,

how can they be transitioned towards one implementation?

Might or might not make sense.

Then, for each we should collect:

  • How are they used? (Scenarios)
  • How are their metrics (based on common search metrics like position of selected element, time to selection etc.)

Based on that, each domain should get a design that considers the needs outlined in the scenarios and can be evaluated using the search metrics to evaluate progress.
