It seems the issue is that while the API has the 50 limit, the CirrusSearch doesn't enforce it and tries to load thousands of pages. In fact, the only reason this hasn't brought down all of Wikipedia is a "sanity check" put by @Tgr in the description fetching part of the API to limit it to 5K. I can reduce that number for now until the underlying issue is resolved (making a patch right now) but this seems like a rather big issue that needs to be addressed somewhere else.
