I get a different problem when trying to reproduce this, which may be related - typing "en" does not return English Wikipedia, just 'enwikibooks', see screenshot. Same for 'de', 'nl', etc. A work-around is to add the commons sitelink through 'other sites' directly on Wikidata, which works fine (tested at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29215893 with Songwe Region).
