The point of having 'mul' is to be able to reduce edits/per item.

A person doesn't have a different name in Vietnamese than they have in
English and thus storing the name in 'mul' instead of storing it in both 'en'
and 'vi' saves edits. We are not displaying either the English or the
Vietnamese name but something that's true for both (multiple) languages.
Saving edits are valuable because of technical performance limits. It's also
valuable because those edits take up space on the watchlist and the history of
the items.

'mul' is not designed for storing information about Unicode emoticons. It's
by it's nature designed for content that's language. 'zxx' would be the
official code for the content that's not in any language like Unicode emoticons.

Currently, when I search on test.Wikidata
https://test.wikidata.org/w/index.php?search=John+Doe+II&search=John+Doe+II&title=Special%3ASearch&go=Go&ns0=1&ns120=1
for an item that only has a name "John Doe II" in 'mul' but not in any other
language its name gets displayed on the search page as "John Doe II multiple
languages (Q57591)". It would be desirable to not display "multiple language"
here and present the item the same way it would have been if "John Doe II"
would be the English label of the item.
