I agree that having a single field and parsing the units out of the input would be the most intuitive way to enter values with units (although I think it and the existing date parser also need a way to offer multiple options to the user for ambiguous strings, like "10 m" can mean 10 metres or 10 miles and 01/02/2003 can mean the 1st of February or the 2nd of January), but I'm not sure how you see it working for the language field for monolingual text. How would it actually detect the language? How would the user change it if it picks the wrong language? A second field of some sort seems necessary there and two normal fields seems better than the existing floating field.
