daniel added a comment. Regarding https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/253898: this should fix any issues with connections to client wiki dbs. However, it does so at the cost of changing our locking mechanism, which means it cannot be deployed easily.
The original issue however is that //the connection re-use machanism in core doesn't work//, or didn't work, or was never intended to work in the way I understood it. I think it's important to resolve //that// issue, because if we don't, it will hit again, triggered by some other code.
