The use case for providing metadata is so that we can use stores like RESTBase, which already provide an API keyed on title, revision & render ID. It also already deals with the complexities you mention. Basically, if we don't have a way to provide this key information to the backend store, then we can't access all the multi-content revision data that's already out there through this interface.
