It's a known issue with path queries, sometimes it starts looking from a wrong end of the path, especially if there are constants on both ends. Use this:

SELECT * WHERE {
  VALUES ?class { wd:Q35120 }
  wd:Q3244512 wdt:P31/wdt:P279* ?class.
  hint:Prior hint:gearing "forward".
}
