So producing the map in R / any other way to the way we have done since 2014 is a bad idea as the map will end up looking different.
Currently the JSON dumps and read using JAVA and then python is used to generate the map images.

There is already a tool setup for this @ http://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-analysis/ but I have not generated any maps since 2016.
Nothing should have changed that breaks the script so I'll set a batch running now to bring that list up to date.
