This is from 2016. Shouldn't we close this if it never happened again since then?

I followed the code paths and could not find an obvious mistake. My theory is: there is (or was) an unserializable value somewhere in the database that triggered this.

The least minimal additional information I need is a full stack trace. If this is not available any more, I suggest to close this.
