The problem with the first is that the article pages would then still have to
be manually updated in each language every time new data is added. The goal is
to design Wikidata so that can be avoided whenever possible, so your second
option is best. It seems the current proposal intends the domain statement to
be synonymous with category. I think we would want the data type of that
statement to be another item in Wikidata (such as airline accident or war).
Then the translations could be automated.

Okay. I had two options in mind, though I'm not sure about which is best:

1) in the embedding code, write a list of all the Wikidata pages.

2) or tag Wikidata pages (like a category, maybe even a category) and
simply pass this category as parameter. This would be translation-friendly, the
updates being in sync across all language.
Or maybe another option, I don't really know.
Joan.

Hi Joan,
It seems that historical event is on the proposed property list:
http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal#Historical_Event_.2F_Historisches_Ereignis_.2F
It has been more than three days, so my understanding is that it can be
officially created now so people can start adding them to the database. Someone
else will have to answer your question about extending Mediawiki to render
timelines automatically though. On the database side, we would just have to
make sure there is enough granularity in the database (for example under the
domain for the historical event as currently proposed) to allow the software to
find just the dates that are relevant for a specific article.

Subject: [Wikidata-l] Chronological axes in Wikidata

Being a high school (15) student who likes programming, I often develop
software to help me (&fellow students) study. In two days time we have a
history exam with a ton of dates to learn, so I began thinking of a way to
represent it in an axis via a web page.

And Wikidata came to my head. I guess it could be really useful, given the
property system (it could take into account single events and also periods such
as wars). I'll try to do it (obviously, I'm now in term exams though it could
be an incredible way to procrastinate...), but anyway, is there any interest in
this? I guess it could replace the current rather awkward-looking axes.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for my non-native Englisn,
Joan Creus.
