Dear WikiCite and Wikidata lists, This is an update on the previously announced call for grant applications for 'WikiCite satellite events' (see the emails in this thread below, for context about the grant program).
The steering committee[0] and I were very pleased to receive 15 very diverse applications for event funding from all around the world and, given the budget available to us, we were pleased to approve funding 9 of those proposals. At this stage, I had been intending to formally announce these events to you all. However... As you are all well aware, a lot has changed recently in the world especially with regards to in-person events. Therefore, in alignment with the new Wikimedia Foundation policy[1], we have asked all of the WikiCite Satellite events [which have not yet occured] to either cancel, postpone (until at *least* mid-September), or convert into an online-participation activity. Two of the Satellite events have already occured. You can read about them here: - WikiCite Australia/New Zealand: Linking bibliographic data – February, Melbourne, Australia.[2] - Biblio Workshop 2020 – March, Horní Bezděkov, Czech Republic.[3] Thank you to WM-Australia and WM-CzechRepublic for hosting these excellent activities :-) Two of the future events had already publicly announced themselves and were in the process of planning: - Wikicite Satellite Event India 2020 – April 18-19 New Delhi, India.[4] We are in discussion about how to convert this to an online activity. - WikiCite Satellite Cologne 2020 - May 6-8th Cologne, Germany.[5] The event organisers have announced a postponement until the northern-Autumn. The remaining 5 events had not yet been widely publicised by their organisers. Rather than announcing them now all at once, as was the original plan, the organisers of those events which are planning to continue will share – once their postponement/adaptation plans are confirmed. Some of the remaining 7 events chosen to cancel, some to postpone, and some to convert to online activities. We are discussing with grantees who wish to convert to online activities what kinds of budget, intended outcomes, and practical support requirements would be appropriate/applicable. For the time being, the best place for the movement as a whole to discuss that issue is on Meta at "WikiProject Remote Event Participation"[6] I apologise that I am not able to make a happy announcement today about 9 interesting OpenCitations focused events around the world happening in Q1/Q2 2020.
