Hello Wikifriends,

You have put big smile on my face with the exceptional comments and strong
response in support of the concepts brought up…

Randy's response

--Thanks for your note ~ I was struck by your comment an "Army of One..."
From that perspective, it would certainly appear that there's more to do...
than one person can handle..."

Yes… far more to do than one person can do and a lack of groups getting
together to do it… Please remember I am in Cambodia… like black and white
in terms of relationship to the type of academic communities you are used to
in developed countries…

--In my view, WikiEducator is as much about content development (and related
materials), as it is a distributed Network of community support - talent,
resources and opportunity. "

Excellent to read such a statement… we are in desperate need of local
language content here in Cambodia… still in my opinion a post conflict
nation where most all of the intelligentsia was wiped out in genocide. Human
capital is extremely low… looking at Gini coefficients we are way on the
side of inequality…

--It is likely more helpful to you - and us - if you could identify (from a
project perspective) what has to happen this round (i.e., project tasks,
dates, etc.). I think the contest/bounty idea is a sound one - of the many
you've received - but maybe it could be used for a project that's farther
ahead in the future.....which WikiEducators (as Ambassadors) could rally
around..."

I need a few source files - 5-10 would be nice – of decently prepared
science an tech ed (STE) posters which are appropriate for grades 6-12. With
the source files I can then have the text translated to Khmer and then print
the posters locally for display at a STE workshop for policymakers in early
December. We need to make the case that Cambodia's future depends on
promoting quality STE so future generations can begin to think innovatively,
ensure sustainable development and provide entrepreneurial spirit through
indigenous invention.

On to Wayne's reponse…

--Your idea of free content posters for classrooms that can be
translated, modified and adapted is simply brilliant! (I'm a little
jealous that I did not think of a project like this myself!)"

No worries mate… I have million more ideas where that came from… hahaha..

--We may not be able to meet your targets for November - but we will
certainly be able to conceive and start an international project to
promote the development of free content posters for learning.

Great… when I was with UNESCO Bangkok I helped come up with a few ideas of
the sort. The concept of providing open content adaptable posters should
be an immense time saver for schools desperate for teaching aids…. For
those of us in developing countries getting a hold of quality tools is a
daily struggle.

----Let's design a "Posters4Learning" project -- an international
competition where pupils are tasked with designing a poster to support
teaching in the classroom - in a subject area of their choice.

Excellent… how bout a website on the COL site to get this going?

---We will need to stipulate two requirements:

1) That all the posters are developed under a free content license -
and
2) that all posters are developed in svg format (scalable vector
graphics format). See for example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svg

SVG is a smart way to go… I have had great fun teaching Inkscape and the
beauty of SVG in ICT-teacher training courses I ran for UNESCO.

3) ensure that the text is modifiable and takes into account
internationalization (differing character sizes – Unicode, etc…)

---- OK - here is the deal. The Commonwealth of Learning will post a
"bounty" for the prizes of the first competition.

Brilliant… love it… you are amazing… can I go over there to work with
you?

-- I'm very keen to offer COL's support in turning this idea into
reality. I'll also speak with my friends in UN agencies to see how we
could extend this idea beyond Commonwealth Countries.

This is a great concept - how do we take it to the next level?

Great start… just realize this has massive potential to change minds… I
can see drab classroom changing into models of student friendly
environments… posters is just one way to change an ugly wall into a learning
experience..

Peace

Tim
