Brent,

I do like the idea of a reading list / discussion group.

We're doing some work (or will do so) on WikiGovernance, and this seems like a
really good activity to try out.

If we can get the Dim Dim thing going, once the conversation around the reading
list reaches a critical point, a 'meeting of minds' could be in order.

Thanks!

Randy

Subject: [WikiEducator] Re: Wikiversity Reading Group - Ivan Illich
"Deschooling Society"

Hi Brent,

Speaking under correction, I think Mark Twain is on record as saying
that he would not let schooling interfere with his education.

If I look at the challenges facing education on our planet, in all
honesty I don't see conventional shool systems associated with the
industrialisation of society making a difference in most parts of the
developing world.

Considerer for example that 76% of the age cohort for the senior
secondary phase in Sib-Saharan Africa will not have the privileged of
a school education - I don't see how conventional schooling models
will have a chance in tackling this problem.

So I think that your reading group on Illich's "Deschooling Society"
is very timely. (Just a little disappointed that WikiEd didn't pioneer
this idea ..;-( )

Brent I'm going to be travelling over the next weeks and will do my
best to keep up with the group. This is a very significant discussion.

Can I ask that you keep the WIkiEd community informed of the major
threads and ideas in the book forum - perhaps we could set up some rss
feed or something.

Congrats on a great idea. I wish I had more time!

Cheers
Wayne
