Yes, Javascript is a good solution for this sort of thing, since it
avoids the cache invalidation performance problem.

(You could even add a similar function to your custom Javascript (i.e.
User:PhilBartle/monobook.js for the typical monobook WE user) and have
it replace a magic marker on a page or pages.)
