Dear Amanda, Randy and All,

I have some resources to suggest for you:

CCARE is the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at
the Stanford School of Medicine (it may have a new name but should be
accessible via search) has a curriculum developed from Tibetan Buddhist
technology provided by HH The Dalai Lama and some of his monk colleagues,
to help people come from the space of compassion and altruism; it has
spread to over 2000 schools.

The second is the research being done by the Academy for College Excellence
in Aptos and Watsonville, California, led by James (Diego) Navarro, Ph.D.,
on PTSD. First they showed it occurs at rates like 87% among inner-city
youth β€” higher than veterans returning from Afghanistan or Iraq. Then they
demonstrated that they can enable first semester incoming students at
community colleges to learn to manage it β€” for example, identifying the
formative stage of a flash-back reaction and stopping it. They teach the
youth to support each other in affinity groups and to use professional
skills for academia and life leadership (it is designed for minority youth,
so they are being encouraged to be leaders).

The third is the K-12 Ethnic Studies program which was shut down by the
Republican Arizona Governor and Legislature because it was effectively
empowering Hispanic students to become leaders and successes β€” they went
from 43% high school graduation rate to over 90%, and that presents a
demographic threat to the right wing. So some of the leaders put their
annotated bibliography (the booklist for classes) online at
http://www.Librotraficante.com (Book Trafficers), and they are doing
campaigns around the nation to get all Hispanics to engage in that study.
It’s a really good booklist for anyone seeking to re-empower democracy and
community. I encourage you and everyone to check all three resources out
and see how they can enrich your work.

Regards,

Mark Roest
