I can confirm this problem. I opened up the freeware IETester, clicked "New IE8", navigated to " wikipedia.com" (assuming the average user would make that mistake), and then clicked "English", which was followed by the IE8 object closing and saying "A tab has crashed for an unknown reason. You can reopen the tab by clicking the "Reopen tab" button".
Closed the IE8 object, and opened a new one, this time navigating directly to "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/main_page". This produced the crash as well. New browser again, tried es.wikipedia.org. Loads perfectly. New browser again, tried en.wiktionary.org. Fail. The problem is unique to the English subdomains of Wikimedia websites. If you wish to perform similar tests, download IETester for free. I am running Windows 7 32-bit, typically use Firefox 7 or Aurora 9 (but have IE9 installed) and performed all testing using IETester, opening a "New IE8" tab for each test. Hope this helps!
