Thanks, Charles, for raising this question.

To my knowledge, the coordinates are not the only issue. Other issues are:

- Wikidata doesn't support the creation of lists in Wikipedia yet. - What
is a realistic deployment plan for phase 3?

- It is impossible to link from Wikidata to Wikipedia-Redirects that
point to a sub-section of an existing article.

Example: http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q736587 - The Peter and Paul Cathedral in
Saint Petersburg (Russia) does not have a separate entry on the German
Wikipedia, but a Redirect that points to the respective sub-section of the
article on the Peter and Paul Fortress in which the cathedral is located. When
I add the name of the Cathedral redirect page into Wikidata, it automatically
returns the lemma of the Fortress and consequently produces an error, as the
Fortress is indeed another entity covered by the data object
http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q38646.

An example related to the Swiss monuments lists:
http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q222022 - Grimselsee. Here, the Wikidata object
has been assigned the property "Swiss cultural property of national
significance<http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8274529>", based on the respective
category attributed to the article. But this information is not correct: not
the lake (Grimselsee) is a cultural property of national significance, but the
Grimsel dam. If we were to produce the monuments lists in Wikipedia based on
this entry, we would have "Grimselsee" (the lake) in the monuments list instead
of the Grimsel dam. - How can we resolve that issue? - By generating separate
Wikipedia articles for each entity in Wikidata? (I'm not sure whether that's
practicable). Another approach would consist in creating a sub-section in the
article on "Grimselsee" (the lake) that contains a few sentences about the dam.
Via a re-direct, we could directly point to the sub-section about the dam; but
this is not supported by Wikidata. Furthermore, there might be a more general
issue related to the "fuzzy" categorizing used in Wikipedia that is not really
compatible with Wikidata (in this case, the "Cultural Property of National
Significance"-category has been attributed to a lemma that is no doubt related
to the protected cultural property, but which is not referring to the cultural
property as such).

Further issues may include:

- Wikidata does support multilingual data entries; but how about true
multilingual support of the tools and apps used for Wiki Loves Monuments? - How
quickly would that be implemented? (In the end you would need to be able to
display the monuments entries for a given territory in one of several
languages, depending on the user's choice.)

- How about the user interface for editing the monuments lists? - We
might well have the functionality to generate lists from Wikidata at some point
during this summer (maybe). But how about the editing functionalities? How
practicable will it be to edit monuments lists once the data are stored in
Wikidata? - I would at least expect some usability challenges here. Has anybody
thought about that?

Are there any other known or suspected issues?

I guess we should have a clear idea of the issues awaiting us when moving the
monuments lists to Wikidata before seriously considering going that path in the
run-up for WLM 2013.

We could list the issues on the project page of the Wikidata Cultural Heritage
Task Force:
http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Cultural_heritage_task_force

Kind regards,
Beat

Subject: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Geoccordinates are live in Wikidata

Dear all,
Does this news change the plan for Wikilovesmonuments,

Switzerland stil have't decide whether or not we will have a WLM2013, but
having the possibility to use Wikidata instead of list in different wikipedia
could influence a lot our choice.

Sincerely

Charles

Heya folks :)

We've just deployed new code to wikidata.org<http://wikidata.org>. We fixed a
few bugs, most notably:
* https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45244 - Shows
statements from "oldid" version, not "diff" version
* Fixed a number of issues in translatable messages that made it hard
to translate them

In addition to that there is also shiny new stuff:
* Bene* wrote a new special page to set language links without
JavaScript enabled (Special:SetSiteLink)
* Made first version of the geocoordinates datatype available \o/
This means that you will be able to enter the coordinates of a city
for example as soon as someone created the necessary property for it.
(There are a few waiting on
http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal.) It's still a
bit wonky so please do let me know about any issues you find. We're
already aware of:
** https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49385 - cardinal
directions in geocoordinate datatype are not localized
** https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49386 - apostrophe
issue in geocoordinate UI
** https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49387 - property
parser function needs to support geocoordinate datatype

Please subscribe to these bugs to stay up-to-date and please vote on
the ones you care about most to help us prioritize. (You can find a
list of all open bugs here:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/buglist.cgi?emailcc1=1&resolution=---&emailtype1=exact&emailassigned_to1=1&query_format=advanced&email1=wikidata-bugs%40lists.wikimedia.org&list_id=207419)

Cheers
Lydia
