The issue is that the hard drive may not actually be connected: we've spotted a crack on the bottom of the laptop, and think that the hard drive may have "disconnected", ie, become unplugged, from the rest of the laptop as a result of that. Installing anything won't be possible until we can get something running to find out if the hard drive is broken, or just unplugged.
I'm running some tools on it at the moment to see if something fixes it. Who knows! I might just get lucky!
