I think it varies for every country and how long the person is gonna stay. I have 1,000$ locked down in Ghana by the south African embassy of which if I return, and of course, before ma visa expires, I come for it.
Plus, I had to show them that my bank account is active and has some few bucks passing through periodically. Somewhere 350$ minimum in the bank account won't be problematic, after settling their so-called repatriation fee.
