VisualEditor has been enabled as an alpha on nlwiki for testing since May, same as another 15 wikis, actually. But yes, there's a substantive difference between the usage of the software in a small number of knowingly-testing edits by experienced users (who normally want to do relatively-edge cases) and actual real-world usage in exploring the social, design and technical issues.
