Dear friends and colleagues, We are absolutely delighted to see a Brazilian nature photograph achieve a podium finish, and it is all the more special knowing it is a direct result of our collective work at foto.wiki.br.
This achievement represents years of relentless effort from our entire team—blood, sweat, and tears in the truest sense—poured into the mission of ensuring that images of Brazil's natural world are available under a free licence for everyone to share. More than just a beautiful image, this photograph is a symbol of our commitment to knowledge equity. Brazil stewards one of the world's most vital reserves of biodiversity, yet the visual narrative of our natural world is often missing from the global conversation. Our work is a conscious effort to bring the vibrant, complex, and crucial ecosystems of the Global South into the heart of the world’s free knowledge, ensuring our perspectives and our natural heritage are part of the sum of all human knowledge. To receive this wonderful news just after a challenging seven-day expedition into the wilderness—battling 37°C temperatures to document a National Park missing from Commons—truly lifts our spirits. It is especially poignant as we navigate the bewildering setbacks of our third application to the General Support Fund. This success gives us the fresh impetus we need to keep our chins up and press on. While it might appear as a small step to some, for our community, it is a monumental achievement. We have often shied away from even nominating our work for 'Featured' status because of a long history of personal hostility directed at our contributors, often stemming from the very fact that we refuse to compromise our principles of inclusivity and collaboration. This recognition proves that, in spite of all obstacles, we have stayed true to our course. More than anything, this moment inspires us to look ahead with renewed passion. It is a beautiful reminder of why we began this journey, and a celebration of the Brazilian natural heritage we are so privileged to share. We are more committed than ever to this mission and excited for all the work that still lies ahead. With our warmest thanks, The foto.wiki.br Team _______________________________________________ Wikimedia-l mailing list -- [email protected], guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia-l Public archives at https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/[email protected]/message/ECWTORA3I2JAW3ZSXJJ7UF66DXN5EOEF/ To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected]
