Wikimedians, We are excited to invite you to take part in an experimental contest. Wikimedia Taiwan (WMTW) has successfully persuaded the National Archives Administration of Taiwan (NAA) to select 40 photos from the 1950s to the 1970s, all depicting Taiwan’s international engagements—especially with other Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.
We invite Wikimedians around the world to complete the following three types of tasks before December 31: 1. Translate the image descriptions on Wikimedia Commons into additional languages. 2. Identify additional individuals appearing in the photos—beyond the already-known figures—and add the photographs to their relevant categories. 3. Provide modern comparison images of the same locations shown in the archival photographs. Completing any of these tasks 4 times will earn you a commemorative gift provided by the NAA. Supplies are limited, and rewards will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. WMTW hopes to use this experimental event during Wikipedia Asian Month to explore new ways of engaging with historical materials. If the response is enthusiastic, we may be able to persuade more GLAM institutions in Taiwan to donate additional archives for future activities. If you have suggestions on how we can improve the event, we warmly welcome your feedback.
