Why do we want to do Wikimedia voluntarily?

The stories we exchanged in Kaohsiung have shown that a lot of the
contributors started small. Some happened in their bedroom by fixing edits,
some have edited because they joined a local editing event, while some
others just love exploring various parts of the internet. They then now sit
at the same tables where Japanese, Thai, Indonesian, and Malaysian people
gather. An introverted person will need to socialize

in this rare chance of biannual gathering and learning.

A Wikimedian will always find stories to tell as we do Pitabangan

🙌 Hub Updates

   1.

Wikimedia ESEAP Hub is collaborating with Wikimedia Indonesia for
in-person *training in Timor Leste* happening in June 2026~

Announcement on *ESEAP Hub Scholarship for Wikimania*

Dear ESEAP Community,

We are thrilled to announce that three additional ESEAP Wikimedians will be
joining our scholarship cohort for Wikimania!

*A Note on Our Process*

We want to let the ESEAP community know that ESEAP Hub’s formal scholarship
policy is still being drafted. We sincerely apologize that we were unable
to announce an open call for Hub-specific scholarships beforehand. When
funding recently became available, we wanted to ensure it was used to bring
more regional representation to Wikimania. To do this fairly and quickly,
the Hub Steering Committee utilized the existing pool of applicants
provided by the Wikimania Core Organizing Team (COT) to select the next
eligible candidates.

After a careful review with regional equity in mind, please join us in
congratulating our newest scholarship recipients:

   -

   User:Twotwo2019 (South Korea)
   -

   User:Stitchbird2 (New Zealand)
   -

   User:Ninjastrikers (Myanmar)

ESEAP Hub also sent Belinda Spry (Chair of Steering Committee) and Feliani
(Programme Manager) alongside the three volunteers to present about Hub’s
work and connect with the global movement. We are proud to share that the
total ESEAP participants in Wikimania 2026 now comprises (or more!) 28
individuals representing 13 countries and territories.

   3.

ESEAP Hub is also undergoing the *process of selecting *one scholar for
   the Language Diversity Conference (LDC).

<https://link.sbstck.com/redirect/4cd21b3e-1c03-43af-8f84-88a4cba35d6a?j=eyJ1IjoiNmptcmZpIn0.PGnN5KZR2s0TTL3sx7f4DLQo2PsBWHryv7JLgqlrftQ>

Due to a strict timeline, the selection committee from ESEAP Community
Connector will select from the existing pool of applicants from the LDC’s
Core Organizing Team. In the future, ESEAP Hub will prioritize informing
the selection with enough time for more participation.

   4.

*The Youth Group* of ESEAP Hub is officially active!

Young Wikimedians from the region came together during the ESEAP Conference
to formally launch the ESEAP Youth Group, a new initiative of the ESEAP Hub
which aims to support and empower the next generation of ESEAP leaders. A
dedicated Youth track for the conference was organized and facilitated by
Youth Group coordinators Chlod Alejandro, Ahmad Ali Karim, Asmah Federico,
advisor Curtis Lui, and members Jin Yi, and Helen Seumanutafa. The track
included speakers from various places in the region, as well as fellow
ESEAP members who were present at the Wikimedia Youth Conference last
year—the instigator for the formation of the group. The ESEAP Youth Group
joins the CEE Youth Group as one of the movement's formal regional youth
coordination groups

Bringing editors together in Aotearoa New Zealand

Written by Sophie Sparrow, WMANZ

It’s a rewarding feeling to be able to bring a community—one which almost
entirely exists in the digital sphere—together in person, many meeting
face-to-face for the first time.

>From 1–3 May, Wikimedians from across Aotearoa New Zealand, plus a few
colleagues from Australia, gathered in the capital city of Wellington for
WikiCon 2026. This annual conference, focused on Wikipedia and related
projects, is proudly organised by Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ).
The weekend was filled with collaboration, learning, and exploring the
future of open access knowledge.

A key focus of WikiCon 2026 was exploring how Wikimedia platforms can best
uplift and support Indigenous knowledge responsibly. Belinda Spry and
Elliott Bledsoe of Wikimedia Australia spoke about their formal partnership
with an Indigenous-owned law firm specializing in Indigenous Cultural and
Intellectual Property (ICIP) and Indigenous Data Sovereignty. This led
directly into a workshop scoping out what engagement with indigenous Māori
peoples could look like for WANZ moving forward. It’s clear that building
trust and creating a safe environment for Māori on Wikimedia platforms is
one of our most important responsibilities. Read more about the conference

This was our biggest WikiCon to date, and the mix of complete beginners all
the way through to highly experienced editors and administrators who joined
us shows how our community has grown. We left Wellington with improved
editing skills, a few more articles on our watchlists, and a renewed sense
of purpose to make the internet a fairer, more accurate, and more inclusive
place.
