Dear all,
Txikipedia, the Encyclopedia for children inside Basque Wikipedia
(https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Txikipedia:Azala) has reached 10,000 articles,
and we celebrate it with a new front page and 6 thematic portals. The Basque
Wikimedians User Group continues to work on new audiences, new narratives, and
technological innovation to make the experience of learning better.

8 years ago, the Basque Wikipedia community decided to start a new way of
presenting knowledge, centered on kids ages 8-13. There were some experiences
out of our ecosystem, but those weren't known enough to gain traction. The
birth of Txikipedia (from Basque txiki = small) created new opportunities for
our education program. Since its inception, thousands of Primary and Secondary
Education students have created articles on a range of topics, from the local
to the Universe. Some schools have developed their own Txikipedia Workshop
Subject, like the experience in Zumaia, where students of Secondary have
created more than 1,700 articles
(https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Txikipedia:Azala/Wikiproiektu:Zumaia_BHI_Txikipedia_tailerra).
Others have integrated Txikipedia edition in their yearly curriculum, like
this network of 22 schools that this year created 400 new articles (See the
list here: https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari:Hezkuntza/Ikastolak/2025-2026).

However, this last year we have seen a decline in visits to the main page, so
we wanted to celebrate the milestone of 10,000 articles renewing the main page
with more interactive content and creating a group of portals that makes the
navigation of topics easier. Children are more interested on thematic
presentations than single article visits, so we have researched how topics are
presented at children encyclopedias to show a fully new experience:

  *
A main page with new sections, with videos made for children, and randomly
picked cards from other portals: https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Txikipedia:Azala
  *
An astronomy portal presenting highlights from the content:
https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Txikipedia:Azala/Astronomia
  *
A life portal with featured images com Commons and cool biology facts:
https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Txikipedia:Azala/Bizia
  *
A portal about the human body, with interactive anatomy atlas and a pediatrics
oral encyclopedia: https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Txikipedia:Azala/Giza_gorputza
  *
A portal about Earth, with weather/climate, geography and geology (and cool CSS
tricks): https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Txikipedia:Azala/Lurra
  *
A portal about the Basque Country, with local content and even a minigame:
https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Txikipedia:Azala/Euskal_Herria

In the next months we will continue creating new thematic portals and making
some events to promote Txikipedia in schools.

I hope these ideas are inspiring for other communities.

Best,

Galder Gonzalez
