Dear Wikimedians, We are pleased to share that the Open Knowledge Initiatives (OKI) Team<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IIITH-OKI> at IIIT Hyderabad has started a new initiative focused on the maintenance and development support for Wikisource<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IIITH-OKI/Projects/Maintenance_and_Development_Support_for_Wikisource>. Through this initiative, the team will work on strengthening support for Wikisource by contributing to the maintenance of key infrastructure and undertaking development work that addresses community needs, with a particular focus on Global Majority communities. As part of this effort, we are assessing existing Wikisource tools, understanding their maintenance status, and engaging with tool maintainers to explore collaboration where appropriate. We are also reviewing requests from the Wikimedia Community Wishlist to identify development priorities that have broad community value. Some of the areas currently being explored include Fixes and improvements to Edit in Sequence, Support for Wikidata-linked index page metadata on Indic Wikisources inspired by the work of the Bangla Wikisource community and Integration of custom-trained Tesseract OCR models for Indic languages. The project is being led by Sai Phanindra, in collaboration with Nivas from the OKI Team, with guidance from an advisory group that currently includes Sam Wilson and Satdeep Gill, which will be expanded soon. We plan to seek more feedback and suggestions from the community through various means. This initiative builds on the OKI Team's long-standing engagement with Indic Wikisource communities. We hope to work closely with volunteers, tool maintainers, and the wider Wikisource community to identify priorities and support sustainable development.
