Dear all, We’re excited to share that Wikimedia Sverige and Wikimedia Brasil have received more than USD 100,000 in funding from Sida, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
The funding will support a joint one-year project: *Strengthening Civil Society Capacity for Open Knowledge through Wikimedia Brasil.* The project will run from October 2026 to September 2027 and will establish two community hubs in underrepresented Brazilian states, supporting local volunteers, cultural institutions and civil society organisations to document cultural heritage, geographic information and local languages through Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. It also connects to Metabase <https://metabase.wikibase.cloud/wiki/Main_Page>, Capacity Exchange <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Capacity_Exchange> and Wikimedia Sverige’s Wikispeech <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikispeech> project, with a pilot on speech data collection for underrepresented languages. The project will also strengthen cooperation between civil society in Brazil and Sweden, enabling organisations to jointly address challenges related to internet governance and advocate for an open, inclusive and rights-respecting internet. This is the first time our two organisations have partnered on a joint externally funded project, building on several years of collaboration through the Content Partnerships Hub, Metabase, Capacity Exchange and shared work on the Wikimedia Movement Strategy. This external grant will allow us to further support the work done through the Content Partnerships Hub <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Content_Partnerships_Hub>. We hope this project can serve as a model for how affiliates can partner with each other to access external funding – and we’d love to hear from other affiliates thinking along similar lines.
