We already have open-source Qwen models (built by Alibaba) running on
the WMF hardware (
https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Machine_Learning/LiftWing/Large_Language_Models#Available_Models)
which has made compute available to many tool builders, me included.

The distinction should be between open weights we can host and adapt vs
closed APIs. Myself I've used open-source models built both by Chinese and
US labs (Qwen, GLM, GPT-OSS) for wiki tools and I think we should evaluate
a model's fit per task according to our standards. Any model would reflect
the biases <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeepSeek_(AI)#Censorship> of its
training set and process.
