Greetings,

As you might have read on the wikis or the Wikimedia blog (
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/06/12/subscribe-to-tech-news-to-stay-informed-of-upcoming-technical-changes/),
a multilingual tech newsletter was launched a few weeks ago to help
Wikimedians stay informed about recent and future technical changes likely
to impact them: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News

As of this week, we're going to send the newsletter to this list, since
subscribers are likely to be interested. Feedback about this decision (and
the newsletter) is welcome at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Tech/News
* *.

Note that you can also subscribe to get the newsletter directly on your
talk page:

   - The
Disambiguator<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Disambiguator>extension
was enabled on all Wikimedia wikis on July 9 (bug
   #50174 <https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50174>). To use
it, add the __DISAMBIG__ code to disambiguation templates (see
example<https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=120414784&oldid=76564202>).
   [2] <https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/72646/>
   - The Universal Language
Selector<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:UniversalLanguageSelector>was
added to all remaining wikis on July 9, finishing the process of

replacing<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Universal_Language_Selector/Deployment/Planning>the
   Narayam <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Narayam> and
WebFonts<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:WebFonts>extensions.

   - The
CommonsDelinker<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:CommonsDelinker>bot
is now on-line and operating again, after a password problem was fixed
(bug
   #51016 <https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51016>).
   -
VisualEditor<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/VisualEditor/Portal>news:
      - According to the schedule, VisualEditor will be available to all
users on the English Wikipedia on July 15.
      - Users should add
TemplateData<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor/Portal/TemplateData>to
templates to prepare for VisualEditor. A

tutorial<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Help:TemplateData>is
available.
      - Parameters marked as "required" in TemplateData are now auto-added
when you add a template (bug
#50747<https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50747>
      ).
      - Warnings are now displayed in VisualEditor when users edit pages
that are protected or have edit
notices<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Edit_notice>(bug
      #50415 <https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50415>).
      - Many other
bugs<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor/status#2013-07-11_.28MW_1.22wmf10.29>have
been fixed in VisualEditor during the past two weeks.
   - The Wikimedia technical
report<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_engineering_report/2013/June>for
June has been published, with a

summary<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wikimedia_engineering_report/2013/June/summary>that
can be translated.

*Future software changes*

   - A new version of the Single User
Login<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Single_User_Login>system for
global accounts will be enabled on July 17. Users will now
automatically go back to the previous page instead of seeing the "Login
   success" page with logos.
[4]<http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-ambassadors/2013-July/000291.html>
   - The software that resizes images on all wikis will change on July 18.
Resizing of big images will be faster and more reliable, and the resolution
limit for GIF, PNG and TIFF files (currently set at 50 megapixels) will be
   removed.
[5]<http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-ambassadors/2013-July/000306.html>
   - Edit tags (mostly used by
AbuseFilter<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:AbuseFilter>)
will now also be on diff pages. They include a link to
Special:Tags<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Tags>before the
edit summary. Wikis that use links in tag messages should remove
   them. [6] <https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/72317/>

design<https://tools.wmflabs.org/bawolff/gallery/index.php?title=Featured_pictures/Non-photographic_media>has
been proposed by Brian Wolff; comments and feedback are welcome.

<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_office_hours>about Bugzilla is
planned for July 16, at 16:00 (UTC) on the IRC channel
