There are various pgs as well as cheap but decent hotels that would be available here. Areas near Karol Bagh and Paharganj would give you various cheap hotels, though Paharganj wouldn't be the best idea. Still, I've stayed in Hotel Shelton <http://www.booking.com/hotel/in/shelton.html> in Paharganj and it's very near the metro and not too bad either.
Also in current weather, you will get a decent non ac room for around 900 bucks. Other than that checking online would give you access to better accommodation. There are lots of people who would love to rent their pgs or apartments as at this time most students go back home for holidays. Karol Bagh side would be slightly more expensive ~ 1600. I stay near Karol Bagh, so if you require any help, please inform me. These areas are very well connected via Metro and close to the New Delhi Railway station. Other areas will drive up the cost, esp in South Delhi. I myself would've joined this workshop but my schedule might not permit it. Feel free to drop me a message or call if you need any assistance.
