When you consider that Appleby Parva, Leicestershire was the [[centre
of population]] in the UK in 2000
(http://www.applebymagna.org.uk/population_centre.htm), Manchester is
as skewed from this centre as London is. Considering the geographic
centre alone is pretty useless since the population densities of
northern and western UK are fairly low. This has got to be balanced
against places with good transport links. Since Birmingham is the
second largest city in the UK and is close to the population centre,
it might make a good place.
