*Wiki Loves Folklore is back for 2026!*

It’s time again for Wiki Loves Folklore!
<https://wikilovesfolklore.org/>. This
Wiki Loves campaign is primarily a photographic competition dedicated to
all things connected to living or intangible cultural heritage, including
but not limited to festivals, traditions, rituals, material culture,
dances, cuisine, clothing, games, or daily life routine. *It runs from the
1st February to 31st March*, and all entries go towards the international
competition.

We have three competitions running this year - Scotland
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Folklore_2026_in_Scotland>,
Wales
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Folklore_2026_in_Wales>,
and England
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Folklore_2026_in_England>.
The Irish competition, supported by Wikimedia Community Ireland, can be
found here.

So whether you’d like to show how the May Queen, the Cailleach, or Mari
Lwyd appears in the UK, or you’re a fan of festivals, foraging or folklore,
then this might be the area of Wiki for you. This competition has a wide
brief, and takes in a huge range of living heritage - everything from sword
dancing to cheese making, and curry to clothing. Dig through your old
photos or get out there and capture new ones!

In 2024 the UK ratified the 2003 UNESCO Convention on the Safeguarding of
Intangible Cultural Heritage, and since then Wikimedia UK has been in
conversation with DCMS about their work in this area, including the
consultation
on the process to establish inventories of living heritage across the UK,
<https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/2003-unesco-convention-for-the-safeguarding-of-the-intangible-cultural-heritage/outcome/2003-unesco-convention-for-the-safeguarding-of-the-intangible-cultural-heritage-consultation-response>
how information from the inventories could be made as open as possible, and
how it could be incorporated into the Wikimedia projects including
Wikidata, taking inspiration from how this has been done in other
countries. We also recently presented an information session with DCMS on Open
Knowledge and Open Licencing: Enabling Ethical Sharing as part of their
programme of work supporting the now-open call for submissions to the
inventories.

If you’re interested in finding out more about how living heritage is
reflected on the Wikimedia projects, we highly recommend taking a look at
the Wiki Loves Living Heritage project on Metawiki

particular the guidelines on Ethical Sharing
