You are correct. Only the regex flavor is disabled. The plain flavor still works.
I've got into contact with upstream about the issue and started work on a patch to fix it. I'm intentionally not linking to the issue because it might be a security issue for others who expose RegEx search like we do. Its a pretty rare feature but I figure being paranoid isn't that bad here.
