Hi,

The latest technical newsletter is now available at <

Below is the English version.

You can help write the next newsletter: whenever you see information about
Wikimedia technology that you think should be distributed more broadly, you
can add it to the next newsletter at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/Next>.

More information on how to contribute is available at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News#contribute>. You can also contact
me directly.

As always, feedback (on- or off-list) is appreciated and encouraged.

*Problems*

   - The abuse filters
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Extension:AbuseFilter>
had
   a problem and caught too many edits. This has now been fixed. [1]

*Changes this week*

   - [image: Octicons-sync.svg] The new version
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.28/wmf.23> of MediaWiki will
   be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from October 25. It will be on
   non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from October 26. It will be on all
   wikis from October 27 (calendar
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.28/Roadmap>).
   - The "Search" text in the search box will show the name of the project.
   For example, on Wikipedia it will say "Search Wikipedia". [2]
   <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T144640>
   - About a dozen wikis now have numerical sorting in categories

<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Tech/Numerical_sorting_in_categories>.
   If your wiki wants numerical sorting in categories you can ask for it

<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Community_Tech/Numerical_sorting_in_categories/How_to_request>
   . [3] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T146675>
   - Some wikis that want numerical sorting in categories

<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Tech/Numerical_sorting_in_categories>
can
   also ask to use UCA
   <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Unicode_collation_algorithm> to sort
   categories. The biggest difference is that characters with diacritics
   <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Diacritic> will be sorted together.
   For example, for most languages Ä will be sorted with A instead of at the
   end of the alphabet. This is not true for languages that have Ä as a
   character in their alphabet. Wikis that already use UCA are listed on
   Meta <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Collation>. Languages that can use
   UCA are listed on MediaWiki.org

<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgCategoryCollation#Language-specific_collations>.
   You can test it <https://ssl.icu-project.org/icu-bin/collation.html>.
