Hi, The latest technical newsletter is now available at < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2017/06>. Below is the English version.
You can help write the next newsletter: whenever you see information about Wikimedia technology that you think should be distributed more broadly, you can add it to the next newsletter at < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/Next>. More information on how to contribute is available at < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News#contribute>. You can also contact me directly. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2017/06> are available. *Problems* - The block log sometimes showed blocks as being much longer than they were. This has now been fixed. [1] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T156453> *Changes this week* - Wikimedia pages will now be better at showing pictures when you share them on social media. The descriptions will be different too. You can see an example of before <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F5432146> and after <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F5432049>. [2] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T157055> - [image: Octicons-tools.svg] There are some changes to the OOjs UI <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/OOjs_UI>. Some old functions will not work anymore or not work as they used to. This could be a breaking change. [3] <https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2017-February/087547.html> - [image: Octicons-sync.svg] The new version <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.29/wmf.11> of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 February. It will be on all wikis from 9 February (calendar <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.29/Roadmap>). *Meetings* - [image: Octicons-sync.svg] You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 7 February at 20:00 (UTC) <http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?hour=20&min=00&sec=0&day=07&month=02&year=2017>. See how to join <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor/Weekly_triage_meetings>. *Future changes* - [image: Octicons-tools.svg] Tidy <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:HTML_Tidy> will be replaced later this year. Instead, the HTML 5 parsing algorithm will be used to clean up bad HTML in wikitext. This will cause problems <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Parsing/Replacing_Tidy> on a number of wikis. They need to be fixed first. You can see if your wiki still has something to fix here <https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikitext-deprecation/> for one of the HTML problems. This list does not cover all problems. You can read about more problems <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Parsing/Replacing_Tidy#Things_to_fix>.
