Have you read http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Download_from_SVN ? Also, you can browse the source code at http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/ . Note that the core code is found under the somewhat confusingly named trunk/phase3 directory (or tags/REL_x_yy/phase3 for tagged releases).
