As a matter of fact, we are keeping currentish and testing new stuff. Just about everyone's development systems and most third-party MediaWiki installations run on MySQL 5.x, and Domas (a Sun/MySQL support engineer) has been testing MySQL 5.x in limited runs within the Wikimedia cluster over the last year or so. MediaWiki's functionality on MySQL 5.x is well known.
