I was working on fixing https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27332 (resolved in r82155) and started messing with removing most of the gratuitous lines in the search UI. Here's a screenshot of what we could do instead. I have a patch for this that works in all browsers, including IE6.
