Sounds like a JavaScript error to me. As you are certainly aware, HeaderTabs switched from using YUI to jQuery between MW 1.16 and 1.17. Naturally, the 1.16 code is not maintained with the highest priority. Now that 1.18 is out, you migt consider updating your MW installation. But of course you considered all this already and there are imperative reasons to keep 1.16, so here goes... :-)
