Asuming you set a background-image in <body>...

A1: There is no background image in div#mw-head.
A2: It is actually the background image (page-fade.png, which shows the 
nice gradients next to the tabs) in div#mw-page-base that is blocking 
your view, so you will need to reset that as well.
