That would be the ideal, but I vaguely remember a previous thread
where some objections were raised regarding such a proposal. I can't
find it at this time though.

If what Gryllida proposed is unfeasible, why not apply the initial
idea you had for login and just disable https emails on a per-wiki
basis? It's not perfect, but it will probably satisfy the vast
majority of users.
