Thank you for raising this issue. It's definitely standard practice to prefer free over non-free throughout the Wikimedia world. While this is a technical mailing list, this is a topic dealing with legal issues. There's an open question in my mind as to what constitutes a "non-free font," particularly given that U.S. courts seem to reject the idea that a font can be copyrighted.
