There is a spinner, although only while the static map is loading. We tried to handle the use case when someone uploads dozens of images at the same time; I figured that opening dozens of Leaflet maps at the same time would be taxing on the browser (yeah, I should have tested that assumption first...). I agree that clicking on the static map to open the dynamic one is unintuitive (it also does not help that they use different tiles at the moment).
