OpenHistoricalMaps is a totally crazy project. The idea is to attach to each point in the OSM database two new keys start_date and end_date. Potentially that means folks will be able to create maps of a city as it was at any given point in time and maybe one day let us generate animation of cities growing or road network expanding over time.
