What I am planning to do is have a drive in my system that holds my data, all of it, and one in the USB case that I back my internal data drive to.
Sounds like a good enough plan. I was just saying that if you wanted to get your data & the OS/Programs that you could do that all in one backup with Ghost or TrueImage. You did say you're using XP Home did you not ? Well if you were using Xp Pro then one could use ASR [automatic system recovery] that is built into NTbackup but this requires a floppy [who said floppies are dead?] & some other media.
I know this doesn't apply to you but unfortunately many novices don't know the difference between a drive & a partition so when their HD dies they may also lose their data if it is on another partition of the same drive as the OS. In this case I advocate peeps to relocate all their data to the My Document folder whether on another partition of the same drive or not to facilitate doing easier backups.
The software I am looking for has to be able to back up only the changed files, no need in backing up what has not changed, and the time wasted to do that.
Unlike most imaging software most backup apps are able to do that. Otherwise known as an "incremental" backup.
