Sandisk replaced the device within a week with no problems.  I told them
exactly what happened, and they just shipped me a new one with an envelope
to send the original back.  I suppose they are so cheap to make that it was
better than creating bad will.

I think that the USB ports on the machine had been disabled on purpose.
They were on-board the mainboard, but had never been used in the 3-4 years
the guy (actually my ex-husband) had had the machine.  When I enabled them
in the BIOS, other problems became apparent also.

The device showed up on my machine as "unable to access" or "unable to
format."  Sandisk indicated to me that it wasn't an unusual problem at that
time (a year or so ago).

Sorry to hear that your "Thumb Drive" failed during a data transfer !  
I would check it out on another machine and return it to the supplier 
if its still in warranty.
