I am happy to report that we may have resolved the issue. He was frustrated
by a newer computer (Windows XP, 2.8g processor, 512 memory) because the
cursor would hang and he couldn't edit his documents without using the
mouse. It turned out his daughter had set the machine to not repeat
keystrokes thinking that he might rest his finger on a key too long. Hence,
too became to if you didn't pause before the second o, and backspace and
delete were a disaster. This had driven him back to the old version of
WordPerfect 5.0 and the older HP computer.

I got him running with single click links on the desktop to a newer
WordPerfect that will edit his existing files. Typed him us a list of
instructions for navigating with minimal mousing. It isn't perfect, but it
seemed to be working. He is going to get back to me in a week or so and let
me know if we need to tweak the system.

It is amazing how much you can accomplish in WP in XP with a total of 3
mouse clicks.

Now he can print (ctrl P) and change fonts (Ctrl a then f9 and tab around)
in the newer WP and make his documents look professional. I also showed him
how to do the shut down (windows key, up arrow, enter, right arrow, enter)
without a mouse.

Thanks to all of you for your wonderful suggestions. I passed them on to
him, and we tried to get the printer to work without success. Without the
WP driver for the thing it just wasn't going to work, and without the
floppies installing another printer wasn't an option.
