There is nothing when I power up.

I have seen Power Supplies producing enough juice to power the fans but not allow the HD to operate properly i.e. boot.
On the other hand a bad HD can still light up but not run thus no boot either. I recently had a HD die on me while transferring files to a floppy much in the way you described in your original mail.
If you have another system unit available see if the HD will run or swap out the PS.
