Since Google clearly states:

  Requires Windows XP or Windows 2000 SP 3+

I think you should as them.

An alternative that does work with 98SE is Microsoft's Lookout addin for
Outlook. If you are running Outlook it is a nice search and index
alternative.

Download from Microsoft but details for configuring and 98 issues may be
found at the original Lookout site.
