In a case like this, I'd physically mount the drives in their "final" positions
in the case, properly re-jumper both drives AND have "only" the new drive
hooked up during the install... This will make sure the drive letter, ("C"),
for your new "boot drive" is correct later, and also keep you from "finding"
and "working on" the wrong drive... It will even "prevent" the old drive from
becoming a "dual boot" OS drive...

I would also temporarily disconnect anything that "might" INJECT itself in
the "drive lettering" with an "improper" lower letter (like "C"!!).
This category includes some types of ZIP Drives...

I'd also remove any hardware that was considerably newer that when XP
was released. Especially things you "know" will need their own third party
drivers... (This category does NOT include Video cards since you have to
"see" what you are doing during the install...)
Otherwise, Keep things simple for the install...

Windows XP will "notice" (and show you) that the ~new~ drive is partitioned
and formatted, and ask you if you want to make any changes to what it "sees"...
(DON'T make changes.)

If it says you are NOT using NTFS, I would CANCEL and think long and hard
about what you are getting into... (Windows WILL ERASE the data if you
make any changes during this part to any partition that contains data...)

If at all possible, back up the data to somewhere else in case you read "my"
instructions wrong, or do not quite "get" what Windows tries to tell you...
